La obesidad causa medio millón de casos de cáncer al año

Según una investigación publicada por la revista The Lancet Oncology, aproximadamente , casi medio millón de los nuevos casos de cáncer que se producen cada año se pueden atribuir a un alto índice de masa corporal (IMC). El estudio indica que el sobrepeso y la obesidad se han convertido en un factor de riesgo responsable de un 3,6% de todos los nuevos casos de cáncer en 2012.

Esta investigación ha sido llevada a cabo por la Agencia Internacional para la Investigación sobre el Cáncer (IARC) y la institución especializada en cáncer de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS)

Un alto índice de masa corporal es un factor de riesgo conocido para el cáncer de esófago, colon, recto, riñón, páncreas, vesícula biliar, mama posmenopáusico, ovario y endometrio, así como para otras enfermedades no transmisibles, como patologías cardiovasculares y diabetes.

La prevención

La investigación señala que reducir el sobrepeso y la obesidad en la población podría tener beneficios significativos para la salud, incluyendo la reducción de la carga del cáncer. El estudio también muestra que una cuarta parte de todos los cánceres atribuibles al sobrepeso y la obesidad en todo el mundo (118.000 casos) se podría haber evitado si las poblaciones simplemente hubieran mantenido su IMC de hace 30 años.

Más peligro en los países desarrollados

El cáncer debido al sobrepeso y la obesidad es actualmente mucho más común en los países más desarrollados (393.000 casos, 5,2% de todos los nuevos casos de cáncer en estos países) que en los países menos desarrollados (88.000 casos, el 1,5% de los nuevos casos).

Norteamérica sigue siendo el territorio más afectado, con 111.000 cánceres relacionados con la obesidad en 2012, lo que representa el 23% de la carga total de cáncer mundial vinculado a un IMC alto. También en Europa la proporción de estos cánceres es grande, sobre todo en Europa del Este (65.000 casos, el 6,5% de todos los nuevos casos).
