El hueso es un tejido vivo y en crecimiento que, durante la juventud, el cuerpo reemplaza con mayor rapidez de la que lo pierde. En los primeros años de la edad adulta, la masa ósea está en su pico máximo; posteriormente, comienza a disminuir más rápidamente de lo que se regenera en un proceso largo y muy lento que puede desacelerarse con dietas ricas en calcio y ejercicios con cargas.

Masa ósea¿Quién debe controlar su Índice de Masa Ósea?
La mayoría de las personas no necesitan controlar su Índice de Masa Ósea, pero determinados grupos, como las mujeres pos- menopáusicas, los hombres y las mujeres con ciertas afecciones y cualquier persona que tome medicamentos que puedan afectar al tejido óseo, deberían estar pendientes de las disminuciones del Índice de Masa Ósea, aunque las lecturas de dicho índice solo deben utilizarse como guía. Controle la evolución a través del tiempo y consulte a su profesional de la salud para obtener una explicación más detallada de las lecturas, en caso de tener preguntas o inquietudes.

¿Por qué es aconsejable medir el Índice de Masa Ósea?
Es importante medir los cambios en la masa ósea a lo largo de los años, además de intentar mantener los huesos saludables ha- ciendo ejercicio periódicamente y llevando una dieta rica en calcio.

Está demostrado científicamente que una buena condición física y un buen tono muscular están relacionados directamente con unos huesos sanos y fuertes. Los cambios en la densidad ósea son lentos, no se producen de la noche a la mañana, pero man- tener una buena forma física es un factor muy importante a tener en cuenta a partir de cierta edad para evitar o retrasar enfermedades como la osteoporosis.
