Se distinguen dos tipos de músculo: el de los órganos internos, como el corazón, y el que sustenta los huesos y permite la movilidad del cuerpo, el músculo esquelético, que puede aumentarse con la práctica de ejercicio, según la actividad profesional de cada persona y el tipo de actividades que realiza.

Músculo esqueléticoLos músculos esqueléticos son los que se pueden ver y sentir, los que se ejercitan al hacer ejercicios para aumentar la masa muscular. Están unidos al esqueleto y suponen un porcentaje máximo del 44% para las mujeres y del 46% para los hombres.

Los valores de metabolismo basal aumentan en los últimos años de adolescencia y a partir de ese momento van disminuyendo gradualmente con el tiempo, lo que provoca una reducción en las funciones del cuerpo conforme se envejece y, en concreto, supone una de las causas más comunes de reducción muscular. Incluso cuando no se utilizan para la movilidad del cuerpo, los músculos queman energía a lo largo del día y la convierten en calor para el organismo, como parte del metabolismo basal.

A medida que, con la edad, disminuye la cantidad de músculo se reduce también la cantidad de energía consumida. Por lo tanto, si las personas de cierta edad continúan ingiriendo la misma cantidad de alimentos que cuando eran jóvenes, tenderán a desarrollar una circunferencia abdominal cada vez mayor. Para evitarlo es importante conocer el propio metabolismo basal y mantener el tono muscular mediante el ejercicio.
